#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that was created to kick-start the charitable season. Celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and chaotic shopping (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday) the goal is to honor and support holiday philanthropy.

The day was created by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y six years ago. The 92nd Street Y is a community center that connects individuals from all of world through art, conversation, culture and entertainment. The organization provides a safe, supportive, and inspiring home for children and families. Their goal has always been to join diverse individuals, organizations, and communities around the values of service and giving back. The Belfer Center wanted a way to rampant holiday consumerism and refocus on the season of gratitude and thankfulness.

To achieve giving goals, #GivingTuesday is built on social media and collaboration. The “#GivingTuesday” hashtag is used so that individuals and organizations can spread the word and share how they are giving back.

Throughout the years, #GivingTuesday continually exceeded expectations. In 2016, #GivingTuesday raised over $177 million online, had over 1.64 million gifts and there were almost 2.4 million social media engagements! Donations were received from 98 countries and territories around the world. This movement has not been around for very long but has seen significant successes due to the use of social media.

There are many ways to get involved, both locally globally. The day promotes individuals and business to give money time, goods and your voice. One of the easiest ways to participate is donating to any charitable organization. Even the smallest donations help. Non-monetary gifts are just as valuable and can be as simple as volunteering at nursing home, visiting veterans or donating blood. Don’t forget to share how you are donating with the #GivingTuesday hashtag!

For organizations, participating in #GivingTuesday will not only benefit others, but it will also your business. Potential customers and clients will be searching #GivingTuesday, and this will increase your brand recognition. Additionally, this can help improve your social media platform and network. Getting your organization involved with the global day of giving is a great way to give back to your community and strengthen your organization.

#GivingTuesday is a great way to support, celebrate and encourage giving. Join the global social event and kickoff holiday philanthropy! Big or small, every act of giving counts.
